Robin Kaye started working for American Idol 2009. In July 2025, Kaye and her husband, Tom DeLuca, were found shot to death in their home in Encino, California. A 22-year-old man was arrested in connection with their deaths, but later the court found him mentally unfit to stand trial, and he was ordered to be committed to a state hospital. The killings were widely described at the time as a senseless tragedy that shocked colleagues, contestants and fans.
The tribute card shown at the start of the Season 24 premiere read: “Season 24 of American Idol: Dedicated to Robin Kaye — ‘We’ll save you a seat.’” This message was a heartfelt salute to her contributions to the show.
