Priyanka Chopra and Mahesh Babu attended the Globetrotter event in Hyderabad to launch the title and teaser of Varanasi on November 15, 2025. The movie, which was initially set to release in early April 2027 is an epic movie shaping itself to break all records set by any movie in the history of the Indian film industry.

Release Date and Selected Cast
Rajamouli’s epic tale Varanasi is made on a huge budget of around ₹1,300 crore and is set to hit theatres on 7 April, 2027 to match up with the Ugadi festive season. We can see a 1.43:1 IMAX format in the whole production which means we can see grander, larger-than-expected visuals unlike other Indian movies before, making it the first Indian as well as non-English film to be shot in IMAX format.
This soon-to-be iconic epic will show us some of the biggest stars, including Mahesh Babu, who plays the lead role of Rudhra, shown as riding a bull. while holding a trident (trishul).
Whereas Priyanka Chopra Jonas returns to the Indian film industry after a short break as Mandakini, not as a typical Bollywood heroine but as an action-orientated character. Prithviraj Sukumaran is expected to play another important role in the film. But what makes a film even more important is the music, which is composed by MM Keeravani, Rajamouli’s long-time and most trusted collaborator and Oscar winner for RRR.
Epic Plot: What We Know So Far
As per reports and insiders, the movie will take us on a grand adventure with both mythological and sci-fi elements that will include time travel, ancient legends and action rooted deeply in India’s sacred city of Varanasi, Antarctica, Africa, and possibly even older eras like Treta Yuga.
Mahesh Babu’s character walked towards a journey through time to prevent an asteroid attack where the story is woven deeply into Indian culture, mythology and heritage.
To make it more ambitious, the key sequences will be shot in Antarctica, making Varanasi the first Indian film to film in the most icy landscape. The scene is expected to reflect the end-of-the-world themes. Alongside that, the film is set to be shot in Hyderabad, forests, deserts and other international locations.
Fans’ Reaction to the News
Varanasi has been creating buzz since the news of the movie came out but what makes it even more interesting is that the mysterious billboards with the date “April 7, 2027” appeared in Varanasi, which sparked even more excitement and speculation of its being Rajamouli’s next release. The title release and teaser came during an event attended by all the cast members, including Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Mahesh Babu, in 2025 where they unveiled the first look of the upcoming epic.
