Bollywood is full of big weddings, famous faces and emotional moments, but one wedding was very secret: Rani Mukerji and Aditya Chopra’s wedding in 2014 was so private and super secret that only close friends and family knew about it, and one of them was filmmaker Karan Johar.
Why the Wedding Was Kept Secret
Rani and Aditya chose not to announce their wedding to the media as they wanted a private, simple ceremony with just a few known faces away from all attention unlike most Bollywood weddings that get shared everywhere.
According to media reports, Aditya Chopra strictly warned his close friend Karan Johar not to tell anyone about the wedding plans. He asked him to keep it absolutely secret so that no news would leak before or during the event.
How Did The Two Meet?
B-Town power couple Rani Mukerji and Aditya Chopra first met each other for a professional meeting. He was starstruck by her performance in the movie Raja Ki Aayegi Baarat, which led to their friendship and therefore, when Karan Johar was looking for a new face to cast in his movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Aditya suggested Rani’s name. That first meetup led to their private wedding in Italy in the year 2014. There are several rumours around Rani and Yash’s wedding the most prominent was them dating while Yash was already married.
Karan Johar’s Funny Story About Lying at the Airport
In a recent interview, Karan Johar shared a hilarious behind-the-scenes story from that wedding. The ceremony was held in Italy, with only about 18 guests invited and because he didn’t want the secret to leak, Karan lied to his friends, including actor Rishi Kapoor at the airport about where he was travelling, telling them he was going to Manchester instead of Italy. However, Rishi Kapoor eventually spotted him and asked directly, leading to a funny moment where Karan had to explain why he was lying.
Karan joked that he was so nervous about keeping the secret because Aditya Chopra is extremely private and doesn’t like media attention. Even now, he says he still gets slightly scared when Aditya calls him.
A “Mad Wedding” With Last-Minute Plans
Bollywood fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee also once shared that Rani gave him only one week to design her bridal outfit since everything was organised really fast and in secret. The wedding wasn’t just secret but also a bit chaotic and exciting for those involved, because no one knew how it would turn out and there were no photos released to the public.
Why Fans Still Talk About It
Even after years, this wedding continues to be a topic of conversation because it was very private and rarely shared with media. The involvement of close friends and no media makes it even more intriguing, but the recent revelation from Karan Johar makes it clear why they never shared a picture.
Rani Mukerji and Aditya Chopra now have a daughter named Adira, and they still choose privacy over publicity when it comes to family life, a trait that their wedding perfectly showed.
