Veteran Tamil filmmaker Bharathiraja was hospitalised on 27 December 2025 following complaints of severe breathlessness. He is currently admitted at MGM Healthcare, Aminjikarai, Chennai, where he is receiving medical treatment.An official medical bulletin released by the hospital stated that the filmmaker’s condition is stable and that he is making good progress towards recovery. Doctors confirmed that he remains under close observation and is responding satisfactorily to the ongoing treatment.

According to MGM Healthcare, Bharathiraja is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for continuous monitoring. His vital parameters are within normal limits, and a team of medical experts is overseeing his care. The hospital added that further updates will be shared as required.Earlier in March 2025, the legendary director suffered a personal tragedy with the passing of his son Manoj at the age of 48.Bharathiraja began his celebrated filmmaking journey with 16 Vayathinile (1977) and went on to redefine Tamil cinema with classics such as Kizhakke Pogum Rail, Kaadhal Oviyam, Alaigal Oivathillai, and Sigappu Rojakkal. He has also acted in several films, with his most recent appearance in the Mohanlal-starrer Thudarum. His last directorial work was the segment Paravai Kooyil Vaazhum Maangal in Modern Love Chennai.
